Candlelight Concert at the Portuguese Synagogue  Thursday 20 February 2014 19.30

Throughout the year, the Portuguese Synagogue is organizing concerts. You can enjoy a wide range of musical styles while the synagogue is being lit by hundreds of candles. A word of advice: there's no heating system in the synagogue, so it can be quite cold! The concerts take about one hour. Tonight we're honored to welcome the Amsterdam group Klezmokum.

Klezmokum Quartet

Burton Greene - piano, band leader
Lior Kuperberg - saxophone
Robert Haliffi - percussion
Larry Fishkind - tuba

It's Amsterdam World Jazz City 2014 and throughout the year the Jewish Cultural Quarter will reveal the many links between Jewish culture and jazz. The Klezmokum combo has been doing exactly this for the last 25 years: their music combines klezmer, Sephardic and Balkan folk music, and jazz. For their concert at the Portuguese Synagogue they've selected the best instrumental pieces from their extensive back catalogue: their Klez-Evergreens.

The band leader of Klezmokum is the American born pianist Burton Greene (1937), who in the '60s was an important figure in New York's thriving free jazz scene, where he played with Alan Silva, Sam Rivers and Gato Barbieri, for example. Since the '80s Greene has been living in Amsterdam, where he started to focus more on Jewish music. Greene still plays concerts and has released many records ever since.

On February 20 it will be cold in the Portuguese Synagogue, but the music will harm your heart!
