Candlelight Concert during Amsterdam Light Festival  Thursday 19 December 2013 19.30

Eric Vaarzon Morel & Oene van Geel

Throughout the year, the Portuguese Synagogue is organizing concerts. You can enjoy a wide range of musical styles while the synagogue is being lit by hundreds of candles. A word of advice: there's no heating system in the synagogue, so it can be quite cold! The concerts take about one hour.

Eric Vaarzon Morel - Flamenco Guitar
For years Eric Vaarzon Morel has demonstrated the surprising versatility of flamenco. What makes him stand out as a guitarist is that he knows how to combine virtuosity and emotion: his technique is as skillful as it is expressive. Earlier this year he played wonderful pieces during the National Remembrance of the Dead at the Hollandsche Schouwburg: "Sefardiem" and "Petenera". Vaarzon Morel wrote these compositions influenced by Jewish music and his childhood memories of the Amsterdam Plantage neighborhood, where at the Hollandsche Schouwburg the horrific events of the Second World War took place. Tonight he'll also play these pieces again. Vaarzon Morel plays theater programs throughout the year, for instance about the painter El Greco or about Don Quixote, though some might know him from his performances for the TV show De wereld draait door.

Oene van Geel - Viola
Tonight Vaarzon Morel will be accompanied by viola player Oene van Geel, who won the Boy Edgar Prize last March, the most prestigious Dutch prize for musicians in the field of jazz and improvised music. Van Geel is both a composer and an improvisational talent, who's praised for his ability break through musical barriers, between chamber music, world music and pop music, and doing so with an "infectious casualness". This ability will surely come to light in this collaboration with Eric Vaarzon Morel.
