Anne Frank Foundation and Auschwitz State
Museum
From 2010 to 2013, the Hollandsche Schouwburg will be
collaborating with the Anne Frank Foundation and Auschwitz State
Museum on an educational project with two important objectives:
exchanges of experience and knowledge about education on the Shoah
in Poland and in the Netherlands, and the development and/or
modification of educational materials for the teaching profession
in both countries. Lecturers at teacher training courses in the
Netherlands are involved in this project.
International Taskforce for International Cooperation on
Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research
The Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust
Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF) consists of
representatives of public authorities and NGOs. Its goal is to
enlist political and social leaders to draw attention
to the importance of
public information, education, commemoration and research relating
to the Shoah. It brings together diplomats, officials from
education and culture ministries, museum and educational
experts, and academics from over twenty countries, including the
Netherlands, to promote the best applications in the areas of
research, educational theory, and commemoration of the Holocaust.
The head of the Hollandsche Schouwburg will make an important
contribution to the ITF's Education Working Group, on the basis of
her specific expertise in the area of education on a site that is
charged with historic significance. This Education Working Group
has drawn up recommendations for teachers preparing lessons on the
Shoah.
Jewish Social Work Fund
Since 2007 the Hollandsche Schouwburg has been
collaborating with the Jewish Social Work Fund on the educational
project (Niet) van gisteren ('(Not)
yesterday'). Each year a limited number of schools take part
in this special project, which involves pupils in the second and
third years of secondary school corresponding with elderly Jewish
people. The letters answer questions about the adults' wartime
history, but also provide an opportunity to get to know each other.
The actual meetings between the pupils and their elderly
correspondents take place at the Hollandsche Schouwburg, and are
embedded in a special educational programme. The project was
expanded in 2009 to include an activity at school. For this
purpose, the educational staff at the Hollandsche Schouwburg
prepared a teachers' guide and worksheets for pupils. To date, the
project has inspired three schools to mount their own
exhibitions.
War and Resistance Museums
The Hollandsche Schouwburg has been working together with
a number of war and resistance museums around the Netherlands for
many years. These museums and places of remembrance hold
consultations at least twice a year on issues relating to their
collections, education, and management. The Hollandsche Schouwburg
and Jewish Historical Museum have joined forces to vigorously
promote the project: 'Don't throw it away'. This project urges
members of the public to give documents and objects from the Second
World War to museums for purposes of conservation, so that future
generations will be able to see them. There are also active
exchanges in the area of education, and special study sessions are
organized for the educational staff at the various museums.
