Right across the
street from the Hollandsche Schouwburg, at number 31 Plantage
Middenlaan, there was a nursery, or day care centre, for small
children. Set up in 1924, its official name was 'Vereeniging
Zuigelingen-Inrichting en Kinderhuis' (The Associated Nursery and
Children's Home). In 1926 Henriëtte Pimentel was appointed
director. Both Jewish and non-Jewish children attended the nursery
and the staff was also mixed. The nursery offered a course in child
care, and young women could live in whilst following this training.
During World War II, after a German ordinance was issued in 1941,
non-Jewish staff had to be dismissed.
