Holland’s most popular actress. Esther de Boer-van Rijk  19 May until 28 September 2014

Esther de Boer-van RijkIn the early twentieth century, the actress Esther de Boer-van Rijk was the darling of Dutch theatregoers. She was best known for her role in Herman Heijermans's play The Good Hope as Kniertje, the old fisherman's wife who loses her husband and sons to the sea. On the stage of the Hollandsche Schouwburg (Dutch Theatre), she played Kniertje hundreds of times. With her naturalistic style that brought characters to life, she drew full houses throughout the Netherlands in many plays by Heijermans and other playwrights. In the exhibition The country's most popular actress, the Jewish Historical Museum brings this great artiste back into the spotlight once more.

The Dutch-language biography of Esther de Boer-van Rijk, Hollands populairste actrice by Joosje Lakmaker (Uitgeverij Wereldbibliotheek), is available at the Museum Shop and other bookshops for €19.90.
