From
15 June until 16 September 2007 the Print Room in the Jewish
Historical Museum will be showing works by Charlotte Salomon,
titled Work in Progress. On display will be the reverse
sides as well as individual sketches which she made for her series
of over eight hundred gouaches, Life? or Theatre?.
Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) painted these remarkable gouaches to
tell her life story. Charlotte presumably considered the pieces
that will now be on show unsuitable to include in her series. These
sheets are unnumbered, and in some cases she has partly concealed
the person's face, by sticking something over it. The pictures shed
light upon Charlotte's method of working and the development of her
style, for instance, in the experimentation she carried out with
colour and text. But above all they offer us an intimate insight
into Charlotte's sense of humour and her sensitivity. Many of these
works have never been shown or published before.
