Similar to Mayer Kirshenblatt and Charlotte
Salomon, Irma Schatz's artistic approach was very personal:
observations of herself and her surroundings. Educated at the
Rietveld Academy, her work consists mainly of portraits, landscapes
and freehand sketches. She depicted her parents, her beloved, her
dog, her friends and acquaintances.
When she became terminally ill in 1980 and her health declined, she illustrated her life full of humour as well as sorrow. Undoubtedly, this form of self-reflection provided Irma with distance from her suffering.
Irma's parents, Sonja Kopuit and the Dutch painter Leo Schatz, donated Irma's work to the Jewish Historical Museum in 1994. High time that Irma's creative legacy is showcased again.
