The Jew as Legitimation  28 until 29 August 2013

International Conference in the Jewish Historical Museum

De Jood als Legitimatie, van Augustinus tot Wilders

Throughout history, non-Jews have used Jews to legitimize their profoundest values. Christianity created the legendary image of Ahasveros the Wandering Jew, cursed to eternal life testifying to the divinity of Jesus, Enlightenment thinkers campaigned for Jewish equality to further their ideal of human rights, and contemporary right wing populists identify strongly with Israel in their battle against Islamization. In this conference experts from a great variety of fields in Jewish History will discuss these and many other ways Jews served as a non-Jewish legitimation, attempting to better understand the complexities of Jewish non-Jewish relations.
