A Jewish community existed on the island of Tholen in Zeeland
for a short time during the first half of the 19th century. Under
the reorganization of Jewish communities in the Netherlands in
1821, the Jewish community at Scherpenisse was designated as a
Bijkerk or local community in the district of Zierikzee.
Surviving archives of the Jewish community at Bergen op Zoom
indicate that the Scherpenisse community lost its independent
status in 1830.
