Almere

The city of Almere is built on land reclaimed from the waters of the IJsselmeer during the twentieth century. An initiative to organize a Jewish community in Almere was begun in 1996. One year later, the community was founded. Since then, bi-weekly synagogue services and Jewish educational programs for children have been organized. Moshe Stiefel, who is also organizing a community in Lelystad, was named as orthodox rabbi.

In 1998, the orthodox community opened a synagogue in the "De Markerkant" business park. In the same year, the liberal Jewish community "Sons of the New Land" was founded. This community plans to open a Jewish Cultural Center in the years to come, and houses now in a temporarily building in Almere-Buiten.

In March 2005, the orthodox community consecrated a new Jewish cemetery, adjacent to the public cemetery of Almere.
