Hanukkah
Hanukkah (Festival of
Dedication) celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Under the Syrian Seleucid empire in the second century BCE Hellenic
culture was imposed and Jewish observance suppressed. Jews were
forbidden to keep Shabbat, to circumcise their sons or learn Torah,
and the Temple was desecrated.
An uprising ensued that culminated in the recapture and
rededication of the Temple in 165 BCE. To light the eternal flame
of the Temple's seven-lamped candelabrum (menorah), pure oil was
needed. According to tradition, only a single cruse of
uncontaminated oil was found, enough to keep the lights burning for
one day. But a miracle occurred, and the menorah continued to burn
for eight days. The festival of Hanukkah has been kept ever since,
celebrating the endurance of Jewish identity.
