Esther scroll
The biblical book of Esther is written on a scroll
(megillah), to be read on the festival of Purim. Every year the story is
recited in synagogue. It is permitted to decorate the scroll since
the text does not contain the name of God. Because of the length of
the story, a long drawn-out tale is also known in Jewish circles as
a megillah.
