Circumcision
A newborn child symbolizes the continuity of life. At eight days of age a Jewish boy is circumcised: this continues the covenant that God made with Abraham. The circumcision can take place in the home, the synagogue or a hospital and is performed by a trained specialist (mohel). The infant is brought in and held securely on the lap for the operation. These honourary functions are often performed by the grandparents. Two seats are reserved: one for the person holding the child, the second for Elijah the Prophet, the messenger who will herald the coming of the Messiah.
Some synagogues have special chairs or benches for circumcisions. One place is for the man who holds the baby: the gevatter or sandek. The other place is for Elijah the Prophet, according to tradition a protector of children.
