Bimah
The Ark is
ceremoniously opened and one or more scrolls are taken out. The
procession leads round to the platform (bimah), the decorations and
mantle are removed and the scroll is opened. A reader then chants
the set portion using a pointer to keep place (yad is
Hebrew for hand). Usually a rabbi expounds on the Torah text. From
his lectern in front of the Ark the cantor (hazzan) leads the
congregation in prayer.
