Uilenburg synagogue

With the opening of the Uilenburg synagogue in 1766 the Ashkenazi (High German) community of Amsterdam gained its fifth synagogue. It is a typical people's shul, right in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, and was put to good use. The upper storey housed the synagogue itself, and downstairs was used for weddings. After 1889 the ritual slaughter of poultry took place in a room downstairs.
During World War II the synagogue was looted and
despoiled. From 1954 on, a restoration studio funded by the
municipality used the building, after which it was renovated. It
has been used since 1988 by the National Restoration Centre for
holding courses and lectures. Also, Jewish cultural events take
place here. A monthly concert is held, performing works by Jewish
composers.
The building is also once again being used as a synagogue: the alternative community named Beit ha'Chidush (House of Renewal) meets here. This Jewish group, whose ideas originated in the United States, stresses the equal dignity of men and women, and of heterosexuals and homosexuals. In 2004 Beit ha'Chidush was granted a sum of money from the Maror Foundation (restitution of Jewish property misappropriated during the war years) with which to appoint their own rabbi. On 1 January 2003 the Uilenburg synagogue became an official marriage venue of the municipality of Amsterdam so that civil marriages (as well as religious) may now be held here.
