The Plancius Building

Plantage Kerklaan 61

The Plancius Building

In 1876 the Plancius building arose at number 61 Plantage Kerklaan as a centre for the Jewish choral society named 'Practice makes art'. The front façade of the neo-classical building has a Star of David set into it.

Towards the end of the 19th century Plancius was a highly popular location for holding concerts and plays, parties and festivals. The choral society and the Amsterdam Orchestral Society performed in the large auditorium and in the Winter Garden, which resembled a cross between a cafeteria and a conservatory. On Jewish festivals synagogue services were organized there and it also echoed to political debate from social democrats and trade unionists. Every Dutch socialist of any repute spoke on its platform: men such as Domela Nieuwenhuis, Pieter Jelles Troelstra and Henri Polak.

Around the turn of the century the glory of Plancius began to fade: in the early 1900s new buildings were rising in the city which usurped its function. The house was sold in 1913 and converted into an up-to-date base for hiring taxis. Then in the 1990s the building once more gained a cultural function, becoming home to alternative mime and dance companies (on the upper floor). The Dutch Resistance Museum moved in on 1 May 1999.
