Talmud Torah is one of the oldest schools in Amsterdam for Jewish education and was founded especially to help children from poor families. In the early 19th century classes were held downstairs in the Uilenburg Shul. When large numbers of poor Jewish families moved out of the run-down inner city to newly-built neighbourhoods, the Talmud Torah school moved with them. In 1924 it took up residence at number 7 Tweede Boerhaavestraat. During the years of the great Depression the school provided the children with meals and clothing.
One of the teachers at the school, Max van Saxen,
described what things used to be like (in the book Memories of
Jewish Amsterdam, Herinnering aan Joods Amsterdam
(1978):
'The pupils were a fairly chaotic bunch and I demanded more of them than they had received from their home backgrounds. A lot of them wandered the streets, they were often sent out of class, they were difficult. There were lots of 'extra-curricula' details you had to attend to - like the pupils' hygiene. The municipal health authorities regularly inspected for lice in the kids' hair. Every morning I would begin by telling my class to place their hands on their desktops. Then I'd say: your hands are dirty, your nails need cleaning, go and scrub your hands.' '
One of the pupils, later to become a major textile dealer, was
Lu Lap; he recalls - also in Memories of Jewish Armsterdam
- the daily routine:
'Every morning starting at nine we had Hebrew for an hour
and a half. We studied Torah and we read "prayers with tefillin"
and Rashi and a couple of other rabbis who'd written books on
Judaism. And you had to learn these by heart. You stamped it into
your memory but it didn't mean a thing to you.'
In 1943 the school was closed by the Germans. Today the building is used for family homes.
