In 1916 the Portuguese-Israelite hospital moved into
new premises designed by architect Harry Elte. The building stood
on Henri Polaklaan. On the front of the building you see the
pelican with its three young, symbol of the Sephardi Jewish
community.
During World War II the hospital was used to sterilise Jewish men who had married Gentile women. In 1943 many of the patients in the hospital were deported to concentration camps. After the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945 survivors from the camps were brought to the hospital.
An extract taken from a war diary, published in the Dutch newspaper De Groene Amsterdammer (edition of 18 January 1995) describes this: 'It's said that the trams aren't running. And the entire city of Amsterdam is without electricity. I'd like to go to my friend Meier's place. But how can you turn up on the doorstep of strangers in the middle of the night? Then someone told me the best thing I could do was drive to the PIZ (Portuguese-Israelite hospital). So we get into a car and go there, and yes - lights are burning. It's a kind of hospital. I'm given a bed. For the first time I fall asleep between clean white sheets.'
After World War II the society De Joodse Invalide (The Jewish Hospital) took up residence in the building, using the name Beth Shalom (House of Peace).
