The nursery on Plantage Middenlaan became a centre for Jewish babies whose parents were imprisoned in the Hollandsche Schouwburg just across the road, awaiting deportation to a concentration camp. The head of the school was Henriëtte Pimentel. Together with Walter Süskind, a German-Jewish refugee in Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam economist Felix Halverstad, she developed a way of 'kidnapping' children via the nursery school and helping to hide them from the Germans.
Süskind and Halverstad both worked for the Jewish Council in the theatre and ensured that the children's names weren't registered when their parents arrived. They also contrived to remove children's names from the lists. The children were smuggled out through the back garden and taken to a nearby building (the Dutch Reformed Church Teachers' Training College). Then young women would hide the little children in laundry baskets, rucksacks or even large metal milk containers and whisk them off by tram and train to distant parts of the Netherlands - Friesland or Limburg.
They saved over six hundred children in this way. Today on a school building at 31-33 Plantage Middenlaan there's a brass plaque reading, 'In memory of all those who helped rescue Jewish children from deportation during the German occupation. 1940-1945.'
