Well over a century ago the Netherlands Israelite Seminary (1839-1943) was established in numbers 175 to 179 Rapenburgerstraat.
Education played a crucial role in the emancipation
of the Dutch Jews in the 19th century. The Netherlands' state
government called the tune. Under government pressure the
Netherlands Israelite Seminary was founded in 1836 to replace the
traditional higher Talmud school.
The curriculum at the Seminary was established by law and was compulsory, and included many general subjects. Rabbis were taught to preach their sermons in Dutch, not Yiddish. In 1848 a law was passed granting freedom of education in the Netherlands, and government interference in Jewish schools diminished. The appointment of rabbi Dr J.H. Dünner (1833-1911) as rector of the seminary was to have a profound effect. In 1862 he had arrived from Germany to breathe new life into the rabbinical training course. In 1872 he was appointed chief rabbi ofAmsterdam.
Following the German tradition, it became required to have a 'gymnasium' level, that is, fairly academic stream of secondary education, at the seminary. Students then could continue and follow a Dutch university course. Under Dünner's direction religious life gained increasingly the nature of sets of ceremonies to be observed - an approach that fitted well with the ideas of the wealthy Jewish middle class, but which alienated the Jewish proletariat from religious observance. During World War II almost all the sixty students at the Seminary were arrested and killed. Today the building is a bookbinder's.
