The synagogue at 63 Lekstraat is in the neighbourhood known as the River District, which before World War II had about a 30-percent Jewish population. Anne Frank lived here with her family on Merwedeplein, after they escaped from Hitler's Germany. The synagogue was built in 1937, the last Amsterdam shul to go up before World War II. Its architect Abraham Elzas (1907-1995) had previously worked with the famous architect Le Corbusier in Paris; not surprisingly the Lekstraat Synagogue adopts features of New Realism architecture and has taut lines and a light interior.
On the front façade are words in Hebrew from the first Book of Kings (chapter 6:13): 'And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and I will not forsake my people Israel'. During World War II Jews could purchase the yellow Star of David that they were ordered to wear on their clothes, from the synagogue on Lekstraat. After September 1943 the synagogue was used as a warehouse for the furniture of Jews who had been deported.
In the 1970s the synagogue was placed on a list of
Amsterdam buildings to be demolished. But instead it became home to
the Museum of the Dutch Resistance and the former young people's
shul continued to be used as a synagogue. In 1999 the Dutch
Resistance Museum moved to new premises in the Plancius
building. Today the large Lekstraat synagogue has become an
auctioneer's.
