Jewish Girls’ Orphanage

Two houses on Rapenburgerstraat in Amsterdam's Jewish quarter were formerly home to the Jewish orphan girls of Amsterdam (1861-1943).
The 'Netherlands Israelite Orphan Girls' College' existed from 1761 and had as motto 'The care of orphan girls is one of the good deeds'; indeed, this is engraved on one of the stones of the façade of number 171. Initially, the College gave financial support to families who brought up orphan girls. By about 1861 it was clear that an orphanage was needed and the house at number 171 Rapenburgerstraat was used for this purpose.
The girls were given an Orthodox Jewish education and taught household skills in order to gain employment as maidservant or seamstress. After about 1930 they were trained as nurses, secretaries or school teachers. Everyone in the house was forced to evacuate by the Nazi occupiers on 10 February 1943.
Today the building has been turned into apartments. Together, the present occupants and the Society of Friends of Amsterdam Historic House Plaques undertook to restore and replace the original façade: after the war the Hebrew texts had disappeared beneath the façade and the roof ridge. In 2003 these were unveiled in their former state by Hannah Belliot, alderman for Culture. Thanks to the above-mentioned Society, the Hebrew text adorning the façade of Fernandes Nunes House at 16 Nieuwe Kerkstraat (formerly a Jewish home for the elderly) and that at 33 Nieuwe Herengracht (formerly a home for elderly Jewish men) have also been restored.
