Jacob Obrechtplein Synagogue
Jacob Obrechtplein / Heinzestraat 3
When considerable numbers of Jews moved into South Amsterdam they built a synagogue there on Jacob Obrecht Square. The Obrecht shul, designed by the Jewish architect Harry Elte (1880-1944), was dedicated in 1928. It is a striking building and typical of the Dutch variant of Expressionist architecture. It has remarkable stained-glass windows illustrating the twelve tribes of Israel, which sparkle out from the predominately black-and-white interior.
Not everyone was equally enthusiastic about this
modern architecture, as appears from an article by Elte in the
Algemeen Handelsblad (General Trade Journal) of 8 May 1928, which
reads: 'The transition from the familiar Dutch and Baroque
styles of building that is traditionally found in synagogues, to
more modern forms, is already proving a stumbling-block for some,
just as is the modern way of illustrating symbolic concepts, in the
manner that contemporary artists are now doing.'
During World War II the architect Elte, along with most of the members of this synagogue's community, was deported and killed. Rabbi Coppenhagen managed to escape to Palestine as part of an exchange of prisoners, where he died shortly after his arrival. After the war the synagogue became the centre for Orthodox Jews in Amsterdam. When at the end of his life as chief rabbi, Schuster left Amsterdam in 1973, the name of the synagogue was changed to Raw Aron Schuster Synagogue.
