Before World War II many famous Jewish artistes performed in the Hollandsche Schouwburg (theatre). Plays by the Jewish dramatist Herman Heijermans (1864-1925) enjoyed their first performance here, including his famous The Good Hope about the harsh life of Dutch fishing folk, premiered in 1900.

A popular performer with the Jewish audiences was the well-loved cabaret artiste Louis Davids (1883-1939). Under the German occupation the theatre was re-named the Jewish Theatre (Joodsche Schouwburg). The occupiers issued various decrees regarding Jewish public performances and after September 1941 the theatre was used exclusively for Jewish artistes acting for Jewish audiences. After 14 October 1942 Jews in Amsterdam were rounded up and deported via the Hollandsche Schouwburg to various concentration camps.

The Jew Willy Alexander recorded in his war years' diary on 25 March 1943:

'There are presently 1300 people packed into the Hollandsche Schouwburg. It's so hot and stuffy in here (and of course stinks!) that people just keep on asking for water and more water. The only ones who have a mattress to sleep on are the old women, others as an exception. For all these 1300 people there are only two toilets for the men and three for the women, and only one or two washbasins. In the main auditorium are people destined for Westerbork camp and upstairs the people selected for Vught camp. But apparently it's all totally haphazard and just depends on the whim of the lofty gentlemen whether you get sent to Vught or Westerbork. A couple of times a.d. F [Aus der Fünten, Nazi in charge of the so-called Jewish 'immigration' service] was in a bad mood and then suddenly half the people in the theatre were shuttled off to Westerbork'.

Since 1962 the Hollandsche Schouwburg has been an official monument commemorating the 104,000 Dutch Jews killed in World War II.
