Gerard Dou Synagogue
Gerard Doustraat 238
Towards the end of the 19th century many Jews
quitted the run-down Jewish quarter in the old inner city and moved
into the new working-class neighbourhood of The Pipe (De
Pijp).
In 1892 a synagogue was built there, at 238 Gerard Doustraat,
sponsored by the society Teshungat Israel (Help of Israel). This
became a learning centre where workers and intellectuals would meet
for study.
The last religious service to be held there was on Rosh
Ha-Shanah (Jewish New Year) of 1943. Few members of the community
Teshungat Israel survived World War II. But the synagogue itself,
with its unobtrusive architecture, emerged unscathed. The first
religious service to be held in liberated Netherlands was conducted
here on the second Sabbath after Liberation Day, 5 May.
At the end of the 1990s the building was thoroughly restored and
returned to its former state. In 1998 Menachem Sebbag was appointed
Youth Rabbi in charge of the young people's programme, the only
such rabbi in the Netherlands. With his arrival, the shul began to
gain a new public.
The (Sephardi) Portuguese synagogue on Jonas Daniel Meyer
Square, the Russian shul on Kerkstraat and the Gerard Dou Synagogue are the only
synagogues in central Amsterdam that are currently in
use.
