De Castro’s pharmacy
Muiderstraat 14
De Castro's pharmacy is situated at number 14 Muiderstraat. For around a century the building was the home of Sephardi Jewish apothecaries (pharmacists) who showed a great interest in the arts.
When Daniel Henriques de Castro opened his apothecary shop here in 1832, the city of Amsterdam was plagued by epidemic cholera. For his intensive efforts to combat the deadly disease, he was awarded a silver medal by the Amsterdam Cholera Committee. De Castro was an art collector and also well-known in the 19th century as a glass-engraver; indeed, there are examples of his work in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum and the collection of the Jewish Historical Museum.
In 1896 E. Vita Israël took over running the pharmacy. In the rooms above the shop he arranged his art collection. Vita Israël was both board member and honorary curator of the Jewish Historical Museum, which had opened in 1932 in the historic building of the Weigh-house.
In 1927 Vita Israël organized an exhibition in the Portuguese
Israelite Seminary, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first
book to be printed in Hebrew in Amsterdam.
This was produced by the Sephardi rabbi and book printer, Menasseh
Ben Israël (1604-1657). After Vita Israël's death in 1940 part of
his art collection was auctioned. Several objects from the Vita
Israel Collection can be seen in the Jewish Historical Museum. The
pharmacy retained its original name after World War II - De
Castro's.
